Artist's Description
Things are looking up for this daylily as it tracks the late Spring, early summer sunshine. Not quite like the sunflower that follows with its whole head in an arc crossing the sky, needing the summer sun in its first few weeks to set a cycle, but close. A daylily, latin name HEMEROCALLIS, likes sun but only gets to see it a day. The blooms last for only a day, which is where the name DAYLILY comes from, but because there are several blooms on a scape (the long stem) over a time, it seems like the plant blooms a few weeks.
This common orange garden daylily was propped up on its scape looking lonely toward the bloom season's end. It was a pretty sight against blue skies but what I liked best was the veins of the petals and shapes of the silhouette shadows. I highlight that here in the upward shot in black and white, backlit, featuring the anatomy and form.
